A Look at power equipment maintenance in Options on getting clean power.?
power equipment maintenance:
Power Equipment
Question by mike p: Options on getting clean power.?
I work in maintenance for a small plant that produces candy products. A lot of the electrical wiring is old and has been added onto and changed over the years. My problem exist with portable metal detection devices. These detectors are very sensitive and for the most part work just fine. But at times they are very erratic. My suspicion lies with the power input. When hooked up to a clean dedicated circuit with no other equipment hooked up to the source of power they are very stable. Where they are unstable, the power source may have multiple other pieces of equipment such as conveyors, and start-stop stations, and other things to put surges and transient voltage spikes on the line.
My need is a good reliable device that can be put in-line between the dirty source and my detectors to clean up and isolate from them. In the future I plan on having a dedicated line installed as a power source for them, but now I could use a good, quick, and cheap fix. I know that words like “good”, “quick”, and “cheap” shouldn’t be used together in this case, but at a reasonable cost may be better.
Thanks for any and all suggestions.

I’m sure that you can find a portable power line filter. Ask the major electrical suppliers in your area.
Or you could make one. A toroidal choke wound to attenuate common mode noise, another to attenuate differential mode noise, and three capacitors, one each across the line at the input another across the line at the junction of the two chokes and another across the output.

power equipment maintenance and Senior citizen women question?

Power Equipment
Question by Regina (SOC): Senior citizen women question?
Ladies……..do you find that your husband is very attached to his tools and power equipment? So attached, in fact, that he would not give most of them up in order to downsize your living style? Your husband, supposedly, is not able to work with these things anymore, is not in the best of health, but he is so enamored with his ‘things’ that he cannot see the benefit of getting rid of most, and going into a place where there is no lawn maintenance and snow shoveling? What would you do, or suggest?

I can tell that in this couple, there is a struggle. Mrs. wants to move on and simplify her life. Mr. needs his tools and other junk around because it comforts him. Few men can live without their tools.
I am not yet a senior citizen but I had the same problem. My boyfriend is a packrat to boot. I kept finding places I thought we would like, but it was really just me liking them. However, he found a place where he was happy to move to, and then the miracle happened. He started sorting stuff, and even loaned tools to clean out the garage. Of course, the loan is a forever type of loan, but the gimmick gave him comfort.
I think more time is needed to make a decision. It’s a question of patience and finding a place which will inspire him more.
Good luck.

Question by Cade: Can someone tell me who’s fault this is? Any maintenance guys out there?
We live in a apartment complex where it is currently 45 degrees F and nearly snowing. The heat not longer works, it recently went out. It was powered by electricity. In the lease it says basically that they have to repair the (heat) if it is below 50 and it is considered an “emergency”.
The maintenance guy came out within a few hours of the problem (as required by the lease under these conditions) but after a while he stated that the issue was with the power company’s equipment. I’m guessing it is beyond his ability to farther investigate/repair? He also left us a portable electric heater to use until it got turned back on. He called the power company and they were supposed to come out but never did. He said for us to call back if they never showed up or something.
My and my friend are at odds. My friend claims this is on the apartment people, I however am thinking it is out of their hands and this is all on the electric company. The lease is not void if it isn’t their equipment right? Which one of us is right on this? Do these heaters take up a lot of energy? Would I be able to request reimbursement?
I’m in the USA. Yeah all the other electricity works fine. Only other problem is hot water is also off, along with the dryer.

Answer by renpen
If the problem is with the power companies equipment, it will not voild your lease. Portable heaters can use a lot of energy but if you just use it to keep the chill off it shouldn’t. No reimbursement.

Question by zaleia: Should I buy or rent power tools?
I am doing some general renovation and maintenance to my new home, and I’m wondering if it is worth the investment to purchase power tools or if I should rent the equipment. I don’t generally do a lot of maintenance-type work, so I am leaning towards renting the tools. But I am living in a new city and I’m not sure what reputable equipment rental companies are out there.
Thanks for any input.
Best answer:
Answer by Corky R
I really don’t have any info for you on what reputable rental companies might be in your area either, not living there, but if it were me and I didn’t plan on doing much of this type of work in the future, needing these types of tools, I’d certainly rent rather than buy. I do a lot of home repair and improvement work in my business and still occasionally rent a tool that I don’t have big demand for on a regular basis, especially the more expensive ones. Our local rental place is called Grand Rental Station.

I have turned a wrench or 2 in my time so basically to start i would get a standard and metric set of wrenches (from 4mm to15mm )(and a basic standard wrench set up to 1″ ) to start you may need other sizes bigger but that will come after they teach you the basics. You will need a good quality philips and regular screw driver. and a set of allen wrenches (the hex head type ) i doubt they will need torques bits but they could not hurt, I would like to add that if you plan to use this schooling to go into this field you may want to get a torque wrench , most repairs have spec’s that require you torque them. but I would not get one until you go to orentation and while there ask questions pertaining to what tools you may need and good luck . oh one more thing a good volt-meter is necessary to troubleshooting 12 and 24 volt systems they range in price from $ 20-$ 150 the 20 dollar model works fine for learning the more expencive models just have more “attachments” or different type of leads
